Handwriting

At Dallas Road, we follow the WriteWell handwriting programme to ensure a consistent and progressive approach to developing neat, fluent and confident writers.
Handwriting is taught regularly through focused sessions:
KS1: three 20-minute sessions each week
KS2: two 20-minute sessions each week
These sessions give children the time and support needed to develop accuracy, confidence and pride in their presentation. Handwriting is taught through four carefully sequenced stages, ensuring children build skills step-by-step as they move through school:
Stage 1 Shape (Reception and Year 1)- Children begin by developing pencil control through patterns and early mark-making. They then learn correct letter formation for lowercase letters, followed by capital letters and numbers.
Stage 2 Size, Spacing and Positioning (Year 1)- Once letter formation is secure, children learn how to write neatly on the line. They develop an understanding of correct letter size and spacing within and between words.
Stage 3 Joining and Fluency (Years 2-4)- Children are introduced to joining letters using diagonal and horizontal joins. They practise writing longer words and sentences, developing a consistent and fluent handwriting style.
Stage 4 Speed and Style (Years 5-6)- As confidence grows, children develop a fluent, personal handwriting style that is neat, legible and efficient. They learn to adapt their writing for different purposes while maintaining high presentation standards.
