Helping Your Child With Reading At Home

At Dallas Road, we believe that that parents and carers play a vital role in supporting children’s development in English. There are many simple and effective ways you can help your child at home.

We motivate children to develop a love of reading through exciting incentives, celebrating their effort and encouraging regular reading habits.

READING

Your child will bring a school reading book home from school every day. You can then help your child to develop their comprehension skills by listening to them read and talking to them about what they have read.

Aim to read with your child 4 times a week and record this in their reading record

At least once a week, let your child listen to you read to them (model expression and change of tone).

Encourage your child to read a wide range of texts, including stories, information books, magazines and poems.

The more children talk about, practise and enjoy reading, the more confident and successful they become.

At Dallas Road, we believe that reading should be an enjoyable and meaningful experience for every child. Developing a love of reading is essential, and we aim for all children to feel motivated to read because they want to, not just because they have to. One of the most effective ways to support this is by helping your child find books that match their interests and passions. Whether they enjoy football, animals, adventure stories or graphic novels, finding the right book can make a huge difference in building positive reading habits.

Visiting your local library is a great way to access a variety of texts and discover new authors and genres.
